Major Yoga Disciplines

Sivananda Vedanta is one of several major international yoga organizations that teach traditional yoga, emphasizing hatha yoga (the poses commonly associated with yoga) as a preparation for meditation and spiritual development. Beginners' classes are very gentle. Sivananda Vedanta's North American schools are located in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Grass Valley, CA, New York City, Woodbourne, NY, and Val-Morin, Quebec, Canada. See www.sivananda.org or telephone 800-469-9642.

Satchidananda Ashram is a second major international yoga organization, also emphasizing hatha yoga as a preparation for meditation and spiritual development. See www.yogaville.org or telephone 804-964-3221.

Iyengar Yoga was developed by B.K.S. Iyengar who, at 80, continues to teach in Pune, India. The tradition emphasizes precise alignment, facilitated with props such as straps, blocks and blankets. For the Iyengar Yoga Institute in San Francisco, see www.iyisf.org.

Ashtanga Yoga This yoga style uses a vigorous, fast-paced series of sequential postures, of increasing difficulty, that allow students to work at their own pace. Students work up a sweat. www.yogaworkshop.com

Kundahlini Yoga A vigorous system of yoga founded by Yogi Bhajan that incorporates postures, dynamic breathing techniques, chanting and meditation with the goal of awakening the individual's reservoir of cosmic energy. See www.3HO.org.
